Just a Reminder

I hope everybody is having a great weekend! This is just a little reminder to please check your child's homework folder each day. I've been noticing some overstuffed folders here in class, and it's making it difficult for the kids to keep their homework and papers that need to be returned separate from the informational papers that can stay at home.

Thank you for your help with this!

Our New Adventure

We enjoyed learning about the Iditarod and using it to practice our reading and social studies skills. Today we found out the next topic that we'll be using to learn our reading, writing, researching and social studies skills. That topic is the Titanic!

While we all think we know a lot about the Titanic, we still have lots of questions. We are looking forward to learning more about this amazing ship and its story and practicing some important skills as we do it.

If you would like to learn more about the Titanic, you can check out our "Websites and Apps We Use" page here on the blog. If you scroll down to the bottom you can watch videos, read information, do some interactive activities, and check out artifacts from the ship. We will keep you posted as we learn about this really interesting and exciting topic!

Connecting with Our Classmate

Today was a really fun day in the Bair's Den. We have a classmate who has been sick and out of school for about a week. He's feeling better, but still can't come back to us. Mrs. Bair knows of a teacher in Nevada, Mr. Crosby, who used Skype to have one of his students be part of his class even when she was sick. So today Owen Skyped with us so he could come to school! Check out these pictures of our afternoon:

Miss Coleman had a conference with Owen to help him with predicting.

There were several helpers who made sure Owen could see what was going on.

Owen worked with his groups to identify coordinates of points using latitude and longitude.

It's going to be nice seeing Owen on the computer, but we can't wait until he is back in school with us!

Iditarod Projects!

Over the last two weeks we have been working on reading strategies as we read the story Akiak. This story tells about a sled dog's amazing adventure during the Iditarod. When we started this story, we realized that we knew very little about the race and had lots of questions. Many of these questions didn't get answered in our story so we worked together in groups to find these answers and present them to the rest of the class.

You can view the videos of our presentations below. These videos are currently hosted on our private YouTube site. If you cannot see the embedded videos and would like to view them, please send me an email at rebecca_bair@etownschools.org, and I will send you the private links.

Mushers are the brave, strong men and women who ride with the dogs. You can learn more about the mushers by watching this video:

And finally, we had LOTS of questions about the amazing dogs who run this race, and two groups share what they learned about the dogs:

A Busy Week

We FINALLY had a full and busy week here in the Bair's Den! We completed our first reading assessment using the strategies of summarizing and story structure. At the beginning of our story we had a lot of questions about the Iditarod, and the last few days we have been researching and finding those answers.

We continued to review the continents and oceans. We also talked about the lines of latitude and played a new version of Simon Says to help us learn them! Ask your child to play by using the important lines of latitude on the map in their Social Studies folder.

In science we took our first trip to the lab, and we had a chance to actually work with the tools that scientists use in their labs.

Our first box of books arrived, and we were very excited to see everything that will be added to our library!

As you can see, it's been a GREAT week in the Bair's Den, and lots of learning took place. What did YOU learn this week?
