Today was probably the most exciting day since the first day of school because today we all started blogging! While most of us wrote very short posts today, you will be amazed at what we are writing by the end of the year.

Busy Day in the Bair's Den
We are finally starting to get into the swing of things here in the Bair's Den! Our morning started off with Music class, and we came back to learn a little more about procedures in our room. We also continued to practice Read to Self and Work on Writing. Some of us have some really exciting stories about what we saw last week during the flooding, and we can't wait to share them with you tomorrow when we start blogging!
Please don't forget to check the homework page for tonight's assignments. Students AND adults have some assignments tonight if your child is in Mrs. Bair's homeroom! :)

Starting the Year - Part 2!
It's been a long time since we've had the chance to post because many of us having been spending lots of time cleaning up. While many of us had losses at our homes, we are thankful that all of us our safe and sound, and there was no damage to our school!
We have gotten right back into the swing of things and have learned several routines we'll be using throughout the year in our classroom. Please ask one of us about how to do Read to Self or Work on Writing. Both classes have read for 11 minutes (and could have gone longer if we didn't need to move on!) and wrote for 6 minutes! We're really looking forward to learning more of our Daily 5 activities and practice more skills. We're shooting for students to begin posting to the blog and start tweeting next week! :)
Don't forget to that students can bring a healthy snack to eat in the morning since we have such a late lunch, and please remember to click the homework tab to check our daily homework assignments!

First Flooding Picture
Hi friends! I hope you and your families are safe and dry tonight. If you haven't gotten your phone call or seen the website we are closed again tomorrow due to roads that are still flooded or damaged.
We have our first picture from the flooding. Tommy was trying to walk on the walking path near his grandfather's house in Elizabethtown when he ran into this:
It looks more like a swimming path than a walking path!
Mr. Bair and I were helping out friends who live in Marietta today. They live right near the river and we had to help them move all of their belongings out of their house and business. This is what their basement looked like right after we got finished at 2:30:

Two Hour Delay & I-Pick
In case you didn't receive your call, we will have a two hour delay due to the flooding and poor road conditions. I hope this rain stops soon so we can get back to learning our new school routine!
Before the rain threw a monkey-wrench into our day, we were having a great time. First, we learned how to pick a book using the I-PICK method. I-PICK stands for:
I - I choose reading material.
P - Purpose - Why will I read this?
I - Interest - Does this look like it will interest me?
C - Comprehend - Can I understand what I'm reading?
K - Know the Words - Do I know most of the words in this material?
If your child has picked reading material that suits them then they will be able to answer yes to all four of the PICK questions. It's important for your child to be selecting materials that are on their instructional level or a little lower so they can practice their accuracy, fluency and comprehension. If your child would like to read something more challenging, it would be great for you to read it together. Shared reading is just as beneficial to the kids as reading on their own.
In addition to the I-PICK method, we also talked about the three ways to read a book: reading the pictures, reading the words, and retelling a story you already read. These three methods can all be done during Read to Self. This is silent or whispered reading you do alone to practice the different reading strategies you are learning in conferences, groups and class. Just like professional athletes can't improve without practice, readers don't get better without practice so Read to Self gives us the perfect opportunity to work on these skills.

Our First Day!
It was so amazing to meet all of you today, but I can't believe how fast the day flew by! I am so excited about the possibilities that are waiting for us this year. I was hoping to get you guys blogging and tweeting today, but with our crazy schedule we simply ran out of time!

Are You Ready??
I can't believe that our first day of school is finally here. We will be doing many different team building activities, we'll be taking a tour, we'll be learning how to use the Smartboard, we will be meeting Dr. Spagnolo and Mr. Kingsborough, we'll practice using our lockers, and we'll be posting to our website and tweeting.
That seems like a lot to do, and it is! We may not get finished with everything on that list, but the most important thing we're going to do is get to know each other and start working as a team.
Do you have a special first day of school outfit you got just for tomorrow? I do! Just remember that we have Phys. Ed. tomorrow so you need to remember to wear your sneakers.
Miss Coleman and I hope you're as excited as we are. We can't wait to see you bright and early tomorrow morning!
